While opening the Diner one morning, Marilyn notices some spilt water and mops it up. She mops the water towards some live wires and receives an electric shock. When she wakes up, she suffers from amnesia and loses twenty years worth of memories. Marilyn is driving back to the Bay, when she is forced to swerve her car after seeing Justin Jefferies walking along the road covered in blood.
John and Gina plan to adopt Jett, but Richard gets in touch and states that he wants his son. Gina and John say goodbye to Jett, but a couple of weeks later, Richard allows him to return. John thinks that Gina and Jett are leaving him out of their celebrations. He lies to Gina and says that he got drunk in a meeting, but Marilyn accidentally reveals the truth. Gina confronts John over being dishonest and she later accuses Marilyn of having an affair with John. He moves out but Gina asks him to return when he injures himself doing maintenance on the house.
At the time, Shane and Anne decided to keep their relationship a secret whilst filming over fears of "cheapening" their love. They kept their romance such a secret that even their co-stars, including on-screen daughter Emily Nicol, did not realise that the pair were dating. Miles, Romeo Smith and Nicole Franklin are overwhelmed by Marilyn and her new age ideas at first, but they get used to living with her. Marilyn starts having strange dreams about Miles' imaginary friend, Rabbit , and she later dreams about Byron. She tells Alf about her dreams, but he thinks she is taking them too seriously. Among innumerable stories circulated concerning Palmer is one that his ghost appeared after his death.
John supports Gina through her many problems with Xavier when he wants attend festivals and moves to the countryside. John is present during a fight which erupts in the surf club involving the River Boys. John is left home alone when his spleen ruptures as a result of the attack. Sasha Bezmel enters the Austin house for shelter, finding John unconscious on the floor. She calls him an ambulance and after surgery he is sent home to recover. John begins a feud with Harvey Ryan when they both enter the local election.
